Spring has sprung, and four woodland friends venture out after a long winter in this fourth seasonal tale by Kulot.
Fox, Mouse, Crow, and Squirrel are eager to explore their newly verdant world. The sometimes-impetuous Squirrel has a surprise, but before he can show his companions, they discover a lone lost chick. They all work together to deliver the little one to its happy hen mother and her clutch of chicks at a nearby farm (“Crow guides them from above. Mouse sits on Fox’s back and holds the chick tight. Squirrel scampers ahead”). The joyful reunion is momentarily dampened, however: Turns out Squirrel’s surprise was a flower-filled nest stocked with nuts and fruits. But now the chickens have moved into the nest Squirrel built so lovingly for Crow! Squirrel’s surprise is ruined…or is it? Wise words from Fox show Squirrel that what he thought was a disappointment is in fact a marvelous example of springtime friendship. Soft digital illustrations in a pastel palette anchor the sensory-filled descriptions: a flowing river fed by sun-melted ice and snow, the scent of spring in the air, and yellow-green fields filled with dandelions. And, like the previous titles starring this quartet, this tale translated from German blends appreciation for nature with sound life lessons, in this case on rolling with the punches.
Captures both the joys of the season and the importance of a positive mindset—and good friends.
