Deep in the Slimy Darkness

The tunnels under the Barbary Coast are endless, dark, and slimy. Follow one of these recipes to create slime—or make up your own concoction.

To find her way through the dark, Jack slides her fingers across the slimy walls. Close your eyes and run your fingers through your slime. What does the slime feel like? What does it smell like? Can you write an ooey, gooey poem about slime?

George Hearst publishes a newspaper article starring himself as the hero of the children’s crusade. Write an article or draw a comic strip retelling the story from the point of view of a different character. What would Lady Jane or Officer Brickles have to say? How about Tom or Joey?
