This fun story of a little sister “sticking” too much to her older sister will be relatable and fun for siblings to read together. The Spanish edition of the simultaneous Sticky Hermana follows Brazilian Cuban American sisters who spend a lot of time together. Claudia, the older sister, plays soccer and likes to play with her younger sister Monica at times. But sometimes Monica gets in the way when Claudia is trying to play with her friends, who are different races, such as Black, white, and Latinx. The members of Claudia’s multiethnic family are varying shades of brown. When Claudia is invited to a soccer tournament, she is determined to make sure Monica does not go, thinking of ways to get out of taking her. Children will be drawn in by the vibrant, cartoonlike ink illustration, which add more humor to the story. The text includes dialogue from both girls with lots of exclamation points to depict strong emotions, amping up reader engagement.
VERDICT: This Spanish-language picture book is a fun and humorous demonstration of the realities of sisterhood and a first purchase for all libraries.
